January 21, 2022

Why would email be hacked?

The monetization of stolen data, which many of us are unaware is often saved in our email accounts, contributes for a large portion of this cash. Our accountant may have received bank statements from us. Contact information is included in rental agreements. This information could be stolen by an attacker and used against us, such as in phishing campaigns to elicit further information, or directly to commit identity fraud.

How to check if an account being hacked?

The first step towards reclaiming your account is to figure out what went wrong. The following are some common indicators that your email has been hacked:

  • You have emails in your inbox and sent folders that you don't recognise.

  • You've been locked out because the password has been changed.

  • Friends have complained about spam from your email address.

  • Multiple requests for password changes from different websites and apps

  • Multiple logins from unknown IPs and locations are reported to your email provider.

How to prevent it?

The experience of having your email account hacked serves as a reminder of how much we use these programmes on a daily basis. The good news is that there are a number of things you can do right now to avoid this from happening again. These are some of them:

  • Change your email passwords, as well as any other passwords you've used on other websites.

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) should be enabled to reduce the danger of password theft.

  • Run a comprehensive computer scan to make sure it's free of viruses.

  • If you receive an unwanted invitation to do so, don't fill out any personal or log-in information online (via email, text, social media etc)

  • Don't use public Wi-Fi or a shared computer to check your email.

Conclusion

Always keep your account safe to prevent an authorized activity from occurring. The hacked email may have your personal data leaked and be sold at black market.
